I had one goal this summer: to do a fundraiser supporting Planned Parenthood in honor of my Mom, Anita Jaffe Seyler, an ardent supporter. My intention was to use the watercolors from my It’s My Body series which consists of 5×7” watercolors depicting a woman in her multiple personas: nurturer; justice of the peace; beautiful; sensual; wise; vulnerable; sexy; colorful; bold; powerful. Each says in her own special voice “LOOK AT ME”; “SEE ME”; how dare YOU, a stranger, legislate my torso. My body is mine, in all its power. I have the right to protect it from the invidious invasion of those who do not think the way I do. An individual’s right to privacy was recognized under many Supreme Court decisions pre-Roe.
In 2020, Amy Coney Barrett was being sworn into the Supreme Court and she gave room to the idea that Roe was vulnerable. The Supreme Court’s decision to hear Dobbs, a case that directly challenged the constitutionality of Roe, put the nail in the coffin. It was foregone, prior to the Alito opinion and the leaked decision, that Roe was dead and to soothe myself I painted and painted these women and then I sewed them into a sculpture called The Goddess. The paintings were her royal cloak.I had it up in my living room for the longest time. I wanted to have a pole that would rotate like a carousel and have all the paintings spin in the wind.
Eventually she was deconstructed.
Out of the 113 watercolors I had painted, I selected 42 to raise money for my mother’s cause celebre. My nephew Liam Nagel contributed with his wonderful photography.
The minimum donation for each watercolor is $65, including shipping and postage, unframed and unmatted. Please scroll to see the 26 available paintings! Please DM which one you want and go to GO FUND ME at to donate. Just remember because they were once part of The Goddess, there is a tiny pinprick in the upper corner showing where she was sewn.
So far I have raised over $1500, which is over my original goal of $1200 and would love to get $2000. So thank you thank you thank you!
