This 4×4″ pen and ink drawing is based on an amphora I had seen in the Archaeological Museum in Rhodes way back in 2016. I recently came across the postcard I had purchased and fell in love with the stag, the simplicity of the lines, the sense of movement and the abstract element reflected in the dots. So I painted it.

Amphora in the Fikellura style. 500 BCE
The amphora is considered to be in the style of Fikellura because it was believed that this site, in Rhodes, was the first places this type was made. However, it is now believed that the pottery was made in Miletus, a site on the coast of Asia Minor.
