Hello, I'm Julie.

I am a semi-self-taught artist, semi – because I have never obtained a degree in art, but I have been very lucky to have taken many classes with great teachers at both the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

I work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, color pencils and mixed media.

The work is figurative, abstract, and expressionistic and has always been driven by two passions – love and surprise.

I first fall in love with the medium, be it the fluid sensuality of oil paint, the generous flexibility of acrylics, the freedom of color pencils, or the variety of fabric, thread and textures used to make collages. Then the surprises emerge as I figure out how to make the work compositionally whole. Each mark, line, form, shape and color must converse, challenge, oppose and or dance with each other. Without such energy the work falls flat.

For me it is always a journey of discovery because, as a wise soul once explained to me, the more we see, the more we see.
